Recently, we had the amazing opportunity to speak with TDi North Powertuning and ask them some questions. We got to speak with them about the core of their business, the work they do, and the cars they perform the work on.

TDi North Powertuning are Japanese vehicle tuning specialists for Honda Type-R’s, S2000s,
Nissan Skylines, GTRs, Supras, 350Zs and 370Zs. They can facilitate anything from general servicing and suspension setups, to full custom 1000bhp turbo builds. They are based in Warrington, in the North West of the UK, but have people travel from all over the UK to take their cars to them.

They are also one of the few official Mugen retailers in the UK and have carried out development work directly for Honda UK. They also work with quality names such as PPG transmissions, Nitron and Tein suspension, Rotrex and CT Engineering superchargers, ERL, Brian Crower, and Cosworth engine components.

TDi North Powertuning

We spoke with Ben, the Workshop and Fabrication Manager. He gave us some insights into the business, what goes on behind the scenes, and advice for people wanting to have a career in the car tuning world…

How was the business initially set-up?

“The business was set up in 2004 as ‘System R’ and later changed its name to TDi North.”

Have you ever had any famous clients?

“We cannot disclose this I’m afraid 😉 ”

What types of products and services do you use?

“We are able to offer ECU calibration with our in-house dyno facility with vast experience of Hondata products including: S300, K100, Kpro, and Flashpro. We also map engine management systems such as DTA, AEM EMS, Apexi, Link, Syvecs and are also HKS Power writers.

On top of this we have recently become Uprev tuners with full backup and support from Abbey Motorsport, where we can also offer the full range of tuning package.

We are also developing software alongside ECUtek for the Honda K Series market.”

What’s the most expensive car you’ve worked on?

“We currently look after an Ariel atom 3.5R which is very highly modified. We have a variety of cars come to us, such as lots of Lotus’ and Ariels, the odd Ferrari and Lamborghini as well.”

What’s the least expensive car you’ve worked on?

“The apprentice’s Astra 😀 ”

Have you worked with any magazines?

“We have built cars for staff at Fast Car magazine before. We’ve also had lots of features in Banzai Magazine, Fast Car Magazine, Honda Tuner, Evo Magazine, and Autocar etc.”

Do you ever attend any car shows?

“We are generally at the race track rather than shows, we run cars in Time Attack, Britcar, NSSCC, Tin Tops, VTEC Challenge, rallying, Hill climbs, sprints, drag racing, and general track days.”

What types of qualifications would someone need to be able to work for you?

“Currently we have 5 people working here, and we have everything from degree level engineers to 30 years’ time served welders and fabricators. Qualifications help, but experience and enthusiasm is vital!”

Do you have any advice for people who want to turn modifying cars, into a career?

“Get some mechanical qualifications but also get down to your local garage and work for them. Some of our staff did it for free and now they work here!”
