The roar of modified engines, the gleam of custom paint jobs, the thrill of a perfectly tuned machine – the Safely Insured Customer Modified Car of the Year Competition 2024 has come to a close, and what a competition it was! The votes are in, the judges have decided, and the results are through – we’ve had another fantastic competition showcasing some truly incredible modified cars. Time to announce this year’s competition winner!

This year, we were overwhelmed by the quality of entries – from European classics to Japanese powerhouses, the entries this year were a joy to see – showcasing the incredible talent and passion within the car modification community.

We’d have them all take the crown if we could, but only a few could make it to the final stage…

So, drum roll please, here are the top five finalists (and the overall competition winner!) of the Safely Insured Customer Modified Car of the Year Competition 2024 – as chosen by this year’s guest judge, Driftworks’ Phil Morrison.

5th Place: Will’s 1996 Volvo 940 – A Nostalgic Head-Turner

Fifth place competition winner

Will’s lovingly restored 1996 Volvo 940 is a true testament to the enduring appeal of these Swedish wagons.

The 2.3L turbocharged engine delivers classic Volvo performance, while stylish upgrades like the 3-inch custom exhaust and BC Racing coilovers add a touch of modern aggression.

But it’s the 17-inch gold JR6s wheels and Nardi steering wheel that truly capture the essence of this car.

A wave of nostalgia washes over everyone who encounters Will’s Volvo, making it a well-deserved finalist.

4th Place: Jake’s 1964 Pontiac Catalina – A Sun-Baked Survivor

A Pontiac Catalina Reversing

Not all modified cars are about heart-stopping acceleration and aggressive looks. Take Jake’s stunning 1964 Pontiac Catalina, for example…

Jake’s 1964 Pontiac Catalina is a head-turner of a different kind; a survivor with a story to tell.

This desert warrior features a classic American 6.4L Pontiac V8, delivering honest power with a likely fantastic rumble.

The Arizona sun has left its mark, baking away the paint on the upward facing surfaces, creating a unique, textured finish – adding to its character and sparking conversations at every show.

A true conversation starter and a testament to the car’s resilience, this Pontiac is a survivor in every sense of the word, and a well-deserved fourth place winner for 2024. This Catalina is a testament to the enduring appeal and resilience of these American icons.

3rd Place: Dale’s Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI – A Heavily Modified Powerhouse

A White Mitsubishi Evo

For pure power, look no further than Dale’s Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI Tommi Makinen Edition.

Extensive engine upgrades, a larger turbo, and a free-flowing exhaust system unleash a whopping 417.9bhp. Upgraded suspension components keep everything under control, while a beefed-up cooling system ensures everything stays cool under pressure.

This heavily modified Evo is a true powerhouse for the driving enthusiast; a true testament to the thrill of modifying a modern classic.

2nd Place: Thanwa’s Nissan Skyline R33 GT-R – Built for Pure Driving Pleasure

Now, let’s shift gears and head over to our second-place finisher, Thanwa’s earth-shatteringly powerful Nissan Skyline R33 GT-R…

Thanwa’s Nissan Skyline R33 GT-R isn’t your stock Skyline. This beast is built for pure driving pleasure.

An Abbey Motorsport built engine pushes out a staggering 512bhp, breathing through Garrett turbos and a free-flowing HKS exhaust. A Link G4+ ECU ensures everything runs smoothly, while a full Nismo body kit adds aggressive aesthetics. Tein coilovers and Rays Volk Racing wheels complete the performance package.

Inside, a Kenwood sound system provides the soundtrack, but the true joy comes from the way this R33 handles.

A driver’s car through and through, it’s brimming with character, and deservedly takes second place in this year’s competition.
